Walk Description

Have you ever wondered how a dog perceives the world compared to a human? What would the world look like if humans were driven by smell and not sight? How do microscopic organisms like amoebas sense their surroundings? We invite you to step into the world of aromas and discover the fascinating science of chemical sensing! We begin our exploration by looking at the mechanisms of detecting aromas and how our olfactory organs compare to those of dogs and other animals. Next, we dive into practical exercises in distinguishing key herbal and earthy scents. After discovering just how vital smell is to animals and humans, we will experiment with creating our own unique aromas using herbs, essential oils, water, and sea salt! By the end of the session, you will gain a deeper appreciation for the amazing aroma 'hardware and software' that allow humans and animals to navigate, enjoy, and thrive in their environments. When: Every Wednesday, 4pm - 5:30pm Where: The Old Schoolhouse, Royston Weather and light permitting, we will venture outdoors into the Priory Memorial Gardens for a short exploration to immerse ourselves in natural scents and observe how local wildlife interacts with aromas. The sessions are suitable for adults, children, or families attending together. If there is enough interest, we can also arrange sessions exclusively for adults or children. This session is part of our Autumn-Winter Adventures Programme, offering a range of nature and science experiences designed to inspire curiosity, creativity, and connection with the natural world. Join multiple sessions and save between 10% and 25%, with greater discounts available when booking up to five experiences. Dress warmly, wear comfortable waterproof shoes, bring a waterproof coat, and pack water. Our community pricing model: • Fund Community Impact: Every full-price adult ticket directly funds nature-based programmes for local communities, turning your attendance into a life-changing opportunity for someone in need. • Choose 'Concession': Select this option if you are over 65, or a student, or if the full price creates a barrier to attending. • Nature Is For Everyone: If you need additional financial support, reach out via our Connect page for custom community-rate bookings. We are here to help you find your way into nature. *Little ones under 5 join for free with any adult ticket! Children under 16 need to be accompanied by an adult.
